Mad Scientist

In my Homeschool co-op this year we are doing science fair, which is by far my favorite things so far. It's super cool 'cuz you can choose whatever science-y thing you want and do and experiment, write a paper, ect. I decided to do an experiment on what type of household cleaner kills the most bacteria. It ended being more complicated than i thought and gave me more questions than it answered, but it was fun and totally worthwhile.

To start I took four Q-tips and went and collected filth and germs from 4 different places in my house. The first Q-tip I rubbed around in the batheroom sink, after it had collected germs I placed it in a cup with two tablespoons of lukewarm water. The second Q-tip I rubbed on the bathroom floor near the toilet., then placed it in the same cup as the first. I then moved onto the third this time collecting bacteria from the kitchen sink, and then the fourth from the shower. Then I let Let the Q-tips in the cup marinate in each other’s filth for 1/2 hour.

Next I took painters tape and created 10 5X5 squares on the floor

I then placed 1.25 mili in each square, labeled the squares as to what

cleaner I would add into them eventually and let squares dry for 2 hours.

After two hours was up I add 1/2 teaspoon of the appropriate cleaner to each.  I also did a control one that gets nothing more added to it.
I Let the squares now containing cleaner and germs sit for an additional 25 minutes.

Then i took  ten separate Q-tips and collected the same amount from each square and rubbed them around in their corresponding auger dish, (I labeled them as to which cleaner I was planning on putting inside them.
I then took the auger dishes and set them by a window, in a place where they will be left undisturbed and let them sit for 1 1/2 weeks, (checking on them frequently)

For a while pretty much there was nothing except condensation finally like you see in the third picture a little bit of bacteria started growing, by the end of of 1 1/2 weeks they started looking...different
